shifty disco roadshow sampler - july 2005

track listing :

the race - go figure

the unisex - mushrooms and brocoli

seagull strange - missing the point

domes of silence - tarnished evidence

as i have been on the race's mailing list for what feels like ages (especially as i never subscribed !@) it was weird to eventually get to hear the bands style. solid old school layered guitars with an obvious ambition for far greater things. held back only by the production their contribution is rather special and consists of a wonderful anthem styled buildup that would make the doves blush.

next up its the young and rather innocent looking 'the unisex'. again this harks back to the early days of indie, guitars are clean and delicate with a singalong chorus that will make people smile. the band could lap up fans of classic creation bands such as teenage fanclub and 18 wheeler.

seagull strange is a different affair - backward noises, and all manner of psychedelia are pushed out while the song wraps around the listener in a bizarre manner. not sure if i like it, but i keep coming back to this one.

and finally domes of silence. i'm sure i aint the first, and i certainly wont be the last, but this track is a straight lift out of the dark gothic rock-pop of depeche mode, and damn they do it well. brooding and heavy but without the intense emotional baggage that comes with modes recent works. definitely one to check out for.
