kmotiv - the abstraction agenda
self released album from kevin kelsey aka kmotiv. comprising of 10 sumptuous predominantly instrumental tracks this is a fine showcase for the production talents on offer. having already applied his remixing talents to the likes of portishead, the tracks are all easily filed within the down tempo electronica with subtle hints of trip hop. while the album doesn't break into any new exciting areas, its a lovely sounding album, and with tracks titled as 'get some sleep' set to a warm laidback spaced out electro infused ambient mood swing as fat synths swoosh around, electronic drums click and a nice electric piano melody then it becomes obvious as to kevins sonic intentions. very nice.
later on 'five after one' steps up the funk, a little. amongst the cut up voices, a flute is added to the hip hop beat making this come over all mo'wax 1994, this track is then later on recalled as the album closer for 'one after five' where the acoustic guitar is more dominating, but means that this track alone with its cohort accounts for 10 minutes of a 40 minute album. while it's nice and pleasant the drawn out aspect of it is unnecessary and the space could have been better used for another track more like 'omicron persei', as this is a superb track with its scratchy ambience, harpsichord melody and splintered electronic sounds prior to the whispered vocals on 'the contact' provided by kevin himself. these two connected tracks provides the best section of the album, and shows that kevin can indeed do moody atmospheric electropop like the best of them.
